How to write an AI usage charter for engineers

Fostering buy-in with shared principles, not rules and mandates.

How do leaders enable innovation without compromising security, quality, or developer growth? One increasingly effective answer: the internal AI usage charter.

For many teams, AI coding tools feel like magic. They accelerate boilerplate code generation, surface alternative approaches, and unstick developers from common ruts. But in high-compliance environments – think banking, healthcare, or fintech – the risks are amplified.

What happens if an assistant generates subtly inefficient SQL that passes tests but collapses under load? Or if proprietary code is pasted into a public model prompt? Or if junior engineers lean so heavily on suggestions that they skip foundational learning?

Left unaddressed, these scenarios erode trust across the organization.
