I love to reminisce about the internet in the early 2000s. It was around that time that I wrote my first line of code on a scrappy website builder to profess my allegiance to my favorite musical act – an origin so many people, especially women, femmes, and queer folks, have in our industry. 

Just like this early iteration of the internet, front-end web development started off with few rules. Since then it has evolved into a complex ecosystem, built upon the social currency of our industry.

When there were no labels

Back in the early 2000s, “webmaster” was the coined term – though I preferred the moniker “webmistress”! I was a starry-eyed internet tween who would find excuses to skip recess to play around on the school library computer.
